NON-ABA Birds:

  • Egyptian Goose
  • Chilean Flamingo
  • Mitred Parakeet
  • Hill Myna
  • Tropical Mockingbird

Note 1: Gray-cheeked Thrush had been reported on Apr 18 from Dauphin Island, AL but after looking at photos we realized that we had misidentified a pale Hermit Thrush. Thus, the correct first date for the year list is Apr 23.

Note 2: Tropical Mockingbird is not yet on the official ABA list. The bird we saw at Sabine Woods, TX is the first ABA area record for the species. If the record is not accepted by the Texas Bird Records Committee and the ABA, we will remove this species from any official list we might submit to the ABA. Otherwise, we will keep it on our year list.

Note 3. There are no accepted records for American Flamingo in the west and these birds are probably escaped Chilean Flamingos, but finding them at the Salton Sea was still exciting for us and we are putting them on our list, even though they don’t count under ABA rules.

Note 4. Aplomado Falcons in southern NM are considered wild and free birds and are countable under ABA rules. The falcons that were introduced into the RGV in TX are not.

Note 5. The spate of non-ABA exotic species toward the end of our list reflects the high number of non-native species that have established themselves in the South Florida area. Some of these species may be accepted on the official ABA list in the future.
