Note 1: Gray-cheeked Thrush had been reported on Apr 18 from Dauphin Island, AL but after looking at photos we realized that we had misidentified a pale Hermit Thrush. Thus, the correct first date for the year list is Apr 23.
Note 2: Tropical Mockingbird is not yet on the official ABA list. The bird we saw at Sabine Woods, TX is the first ABA area record for the species. If the record is not accepted by the Texas Bird Records Committee and the ABA, we will remove this species from any official list we might submit to the ABA. Otherwise, we will keep it on our year list.
Note 3. There are no accepted records for American Flamingo in the west and these birds are probably escapees from a zoo, but finding them at the Salton Sea was still exciting for us and we are putting them on our list, even though they don’t count under ABA rules.
Good Luck on your Big Year.
Your first bird will be the very social Black-capped Chicadee.
Good Luck and enjoy your adventure.
